What Are The Function Keys For Mac

  • Function Keys in Catalina. To change the settings corresponding to your Function keys, go to System Preferences Keyboard Keyboard. At the bottom is an option to “Use F1, F2, etc as standard.
  • 2 - Mac layout 3 - Easy-Switch keys 4 - ON/OFF switch 5 - Battery status LED and ambient light sensor. Pair to a second computer with Easy-Switch. Your keyboard can be paired with up to three different computers using the Easy-Switch button to change the channel. Select the channel you want and press and hold the Easy-Switch button for three.

Hi All,

Note: Changing system function key preferences affects how the function keys work on your Mac, not just in Word. After changing this setting, you can still perform the special features printed on a function key. Just press the Fn key. For example, to use the F12 key to change your volume, press Fn+F12.

I bought a new Mac, 27'

Macs

Which was as an upgrade to my old Mac (which still works perfectly well)

However my old Mac has the Apple (wired) extended keyboard the one with the attached number pad to the right side where as my new Mac doesn't, it only has the short i.e. no number pad keyboard. So I swapped them over.

My problem is this:

The old keyboard attached (via USB) to my new Mac works perfectly fine. All buttons work as they should including functions keys.

My new keyboard which is now connected to my old Mac doesn't work as it should. Basically the function keys don't work, more specifically I can't get my volume or music play keys to work.

Ive been to various forums and most state:

Use the top row of keys on your keyboard to perform built-in features or as standard function keys.

If your Apple keyboard has icons printed on some of the keys on its top row, these keys can be used to perform the special features shown in each icon. They can also be used as standard function keys (F1 through F12). The action performed by standard function keys varies depending on the app you're using, or depending on the keyboard shortcuts listed in the Keyboard & Mouse pane of System Preferences.

By default, pressing one of these keys performs the special feature indicated by the icon printed on the key. For example, pressing the keys with speaker icons adjusts the volume. If you want to use one of these keys as a standard function key, hold the Fn key (usually in the lower left corner of the keyboard) while pressing the function key. Pressing Fn-F10 (speaker icon) performs the function assigned to the F10 key instead of toggling mute on or off.

If you prefer the top row of keys to always behave as standard function keys without holding the Fn key:

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
  2. From the View menu, choose Keyboard.
  3. Click the Keyboard tab if it is not already selected
  4. Enable 'Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.'

from Apple support - How to change the behavior of function keys on your Mac - Apple Support

which refers to this setting as seen below:

However my settings don't have this re-set facility.

As such I can't seem to get any of my volume keys, or music play keys to operate.

Can you help please.

What Are The Function Keys For Copy And Paste

Keys with an Fn key or F Lock provide two sets of commands for many keys. This includes the top row of standard function keys (F1–F12).

Standard commands are labeled on the front of the keys (such as F3). Alternate commands are labeled on top of the keys (such as Redo). In some programs, the function of a standard command and an alternate command may be the same (for example, F1 typically displays Help for the active window, and on some keyboards, the alternate command for F1 is also Help).

Use the Fn key

  • On keyboards with an Fn key, hold down Fn and press the key to use the alternate commands.

Tips

  • You can also press and hold Fn while moving your finger up and down on the navigation pad to scroll within a document.

  • You can press and hold Fn while pressing keyboard letters M, J, K, L, U, I, O, P, /, ;, and 0 to match the physical layout of a numeric keypad.

Use the F Lock key

  • If your keyboard has an F Lock key, press it to toggle between the standard commands and alternate commands.

When the F Lock light is Off, alternate functions work (Help, Undo, and so on).
When the F Lock light is On, standard functions work (F1, F2, and so on).

Use alternate command keys

The following table specifies the default key assignments for the alternate command keys. You can reassign many of them using Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center.
